Obelisk the Tormentor was the first Egyptian God Card to appear in the Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. Marik’s sister, Ishizu Ishtar, protected Obelisk from the Rare Hunters, and gave it to Kaiba to use in the Battle City Tournament. You’ll be able to get a copy of Obelisk the Tormentor just as easily, in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Legendary Collection.
Obelisk the Tormentor had a variety of powers in the animated series, but its biggest strength may be its incredible stats. Obelisk starts off with 4000 ATK and 4000 DEF when it’s Summoned! Like all of the Egyptian God Cards, Obelisk unleashed a bunch of other powers too, as it was used throughout the series.
Kaiba first tested out Obelisk in a Duel against a computer. He programmed all of his Battle City rules into the Dueling computer, and even let the computer use his deadly Deck, with all 3 copies of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon in it. But the computer was no match for Kaiba’s newly acquired Egyptian God Card!
When the computer had Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon on the field, Kaiba Summoned Obelisk the Tormentor by Tributing 3 monsters. Then he activated one of its latent powers. By Tributing 2 other monsters, Kaiba was able to wipe out the Duel computer’s field and reduce its Life Points from 4000 to 0 in a single turn!
Obelisk used the same power again in Kaiba and Yugi’s first team Duel against the Rare Hunters, Lumis and Umbra. But this time, Obelisk the Tormentor punched through a Mirror Force Trap Card to get the job done!
In Kaiba’s Duel against Yugi in the Battle City Semi-Finals, Kaiba Summoned Obelisk and had it clash with Yugi’s Slifer the Sky Dragon. In this Duel, another of Obelisk’s powers was uncovered: like the other Egyptian God Cards, Obelisk the Tormentor is only affected by card effects for a single turn! When Yugi used the effect of Slifer and Spell Cards like Necromancy to reduce Obelisk’s ATK, the reduction quickly wore off.
Late in the Duel, Kaiba’s Obelisk the Tormentor and Yugi’s Slifer the Sky Dragon destroyed one another and the Duel continued without them. In the end, Yugi claimed the victory, as well as Kaiba’s Obelisk the Tormentor.
Yugi used Obelisk the Tormentor to take down Marik in the Battle City Finals. He first Summoned it to the field by Tributing the 3 Metal Fiend Tokens that he got when he combined Multiply with his Token from Fiend’s Sanctuary (WARNING: This doesn’t actually work in the TCG unless you’re the reincarnation of an ancient pharaoh, in which case you can do as you please). Although Obelisk the Tormentor didn’t end the Duel for Yugi, it carried him through it so that he could eventually win and obtain the final Egyptian God Card: The Winged Dragon of Ra.
Unlike Slifer the Sky Dragon and The Winged Dragon of Ra, Obelisk the Tormentor was used in a Duel between the Battle City Finals and the last few episodes. After Dartz (a villain determined to wipe out humanity and restart civilization) sent his henchmen to swipe Yugi’s God Cards, Yugi was forced to Duel one of them who was in possession of Obelisk the Tormentor. Dartz’s henchman strengthened Obelisk to 4500 ATK with The Seal of Orichalcos, but Yugi was able to take it down with the combined attack of his Magnet Warriors. He attacked together with Alpha the Magnet Warrior, Beta the Magnet Warrior, and Gamma the Magnet Warrior thanks to the Spell Card, Brave Attack! Yugi proceeded to win the Duel, and was eventually able to reclaim his Egyptian God Cards.
The Obelisk the Tormentor in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Legendary Collection can’t be used in a Duel, but the nostalgia it brings can be as awesome as Summoning it. Take a look at Obelisk and relive Yugi and Kaiba’s toughest challenges!
