Last year, the first Hidden Arsenal booster set hit the shelves and sent everybody scrambling to get their hands on Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, one of the most useful Synchro monsters around. Now with Hidden Arsenal 3, we get to see Brionac’s big Ice Barrier brother, and it’s sure to be a popular inclusion in Extra Decks for a long time to come.

Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier is a Level 7 Synchro Monster with 2500 ATK, and it can only be Synchro Summoned using WATER monsters as its non-Tuner materials. Some of the most popular WATER monsters around right now are Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier,Snowman Eater and Mobius the Frost Monarch. If you have a Brionac or Mobius on the field, you can combine them with a Level 1 Tuner to Synchro Summon Gungnir
If you’re using Snowman Eater, you can Normal Summon Debris Dragon and use its effect to Special Summon Snowman Eater. Since Gungnir’s a Dragon-Type Synchro Monster, you can then Tune Debris Dragon and Snowman Eater together to Synchro Summon Gungnir. Many Duelists are already using Snowman Eater in their Quickdraw and Plant Synchro Side Decks, but with Gungnir available, they have a great reason to move those copies into their Main Deck.

Many Decks have easy access to Gungnir!

Gungnir can also be easily Summoned in a Formula Monarch Deck, which uses Treeborn Frogand Fishborg Blaster to set up most of its key combos. Let’s say you’ve got Treeborn Frogand Fishborg Blaster in your Graveyard. During your Standby Phase, Special SummonTreeborn Frog with its own effect. Now that you control a Level 3 or lower WATER monster, you can Summon Fishborg in your Main Phase. Next, you Tribute Treeborn for Mobius the Frost Monarch and destroy 2 of your opponent’s Spells and Traps. Finally, with Mobius and Fishborg on the field, you can Tune the 2 together to Synchro Summon Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier and use its effect to destroy 2 more cards!
Once you’ve Summoned Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, you can use its effect to clear the way for a direct attack. By discarding up to 2 cards from your hand to the Graveyard, you can destroy the same number of cards your opponent controls. With this effect you can get rid of anything you want from troublesome Set Spells and Traps to monsters with higher ATK that you can’t take down in battle. Since you’re destroying cards, you can use Gungnir’s effect to destroy only 1 if you think your opponent has Starlight Road Set (which they’ll activate if you were to destroy 2 cards).
Which cards should you discard for Gungnir?
If you’re using Formula Monarchs, you can discard Treeborn FrogFishborg Blaster orRonintoadin to send them directly to the graveyard, ready to be Special Summoned later on. If you Summoned Gungnir in a Plant Synchro Deck, you can do the same with SporeGlow-Up Bulb and Dandylion (which will also give you 2 free Fluff Tokens). If you’re running a Fish deck, you can discard Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth and then Summon Phantom of Chaos later on in the Duel to copy its effect and set off your big combos. Since most of the monsters in that Deck are WATER monsters, you’ll be able to Synchro Summon Gungnir quite easily as well.
Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier is the latest in a long line of powerful Level 7 Synchro Monsters. With a few slight tweaks to your Main Deck, you’ll be able to Summon it no matter what Deck you’re using. If you want to get in on the action, be sure to look out for Gungnir inHidden Arsenal 3!
