Blackwing Decks had to make some big changes when the new Forbidden & Limited Cards List went into effect on September 1st. Two of the top cards in Blackwing Decks, Black Whirlwindand Royal Oppression were Limited, cutting down the number Blackwing Duelists could use. These changes left a lot of Blackwing Duelists wondering if their Decks would still work in competitive tournaments, and thanks to Cards for Black Feathers and Pot of Duality, they will.

Cards for Black Feathers and Pot of Duality make Blackwing Decks better and more consistent than ever before. Since Cards for Black Feathers lets you dig 2 cards deeper into your Deck, and Pot of Duality lets you take 1 of the top 3 cards, you can get to the cards you need, faster than ever before! That includes the newly Limited Black Whirlwind and Royal Oppression, or important cards like Icarus Attack that Blackwing Duelists often run 3 copies of. Cards for Black Feathers and Pot of Duality also give you access to the Blacking monsters you need, when Black Whirlwind isn’t available to fly them into your hand.
You can only use 1 copy of Cards for Black Feathers and 1 copy of Pot of Duality each turn, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use them both! Since Cards for Black Feathers and Pot of Duality require you to give up Special Summons during the turn they’re used, playing them together will let you put that turn to maximum use. Using them together lets you grab 3 cards from the top 5 of your Deck, boosting your chances of getting the exact cards you need. Powerful cards including Dark Hole and Monster Reborn have never been so accessible to Blackwing Duelists.
Situational cards like Delta Crow – Anti Reverse, which is only usable while you control a Blackwing and your opponent has face-down cards in his Spell and Trap Card Zones, are also better than ever before since you can grab them when you need them. If you reveal Delta Crow – Anti Reverse with Pot of Duality while your opponent has no cards in his back row or you don’t have a Blackwing monster, you can shuffle it back into your Deck and take one of the other 2 revealed cards instead.
You may even be able to use the cost of Cards for Black Feathers, which requires you to remove a Blackwing monster in your hand from the game in order to activate it, to your advantage. If you remove Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor or a high-Level Blackwing like Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn, you’ll be able to use Burial from a Different Dimensionlater on to return them to your Graveyard. Then you can remove them with Vayu’s effect to Special Summon big Synchro Monsters like Blackwing Armed Wing from your Extra Deck.Return from the Different Dimension can also be a powerful card to use to bring back the Blackwing monster you removed from the game with Cards for Black FeathersAllure of Darkness, and the effect of Vayu. It lets you end the Duel in a single turn with your flock of Special Summoned monsters!
Even though you can’t Special Summon during the turn you use Cards for Black Feathers andPot of Duality, you shouldn’t let it deter you from using them to grab cards that Special Summon monsters or can be Special Summoned. Cards for Black Feathers and Pot of Dualityare great for setting up strong plays on your next turn. If you use them to pick up Monster Reborn or Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North, you can gain an advantage over your opponent on the following turn, when you put them to use. You may even be able to Special Summon enough monsters to win the game on that turn.
The strength that Blackwing Decks lost with the Limitation of Black Whirlwind and Royal Oppression is more than made up for with the consistency added by Cards for Black Feathers and Pot of Duality. Blackwing Decks didn’t have the strongest showing at YCS Toronto, but they were back in force in San Jose taking two of the top 4 spots. Thanks to the implementation of new ideas, like using Pot of Duality and Cards for Black Feathers, Blackwings are soaring above the competition again!
