Almost every Deck in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Special Summons monsters to help win the Duel. “Royal Oppression” can negate those Summons. That’s why “Royal Oppression” is a powerful card that can be used against almost any Deck.


“Royal Oppression” is a Continuous Trap Card with this effect: Either player can pay 800 Life Points to negate the Special Summon of a monster(s), and/or an effect that Special Summons a monster(s), and destroy those cards.

But “Royal Oppression” is also one of the trickiest cards for Duelists to use. Here are a few key things to remember when using “Royal Oppression.”

When Can I use Royal Oppression?


When a monster like “Dark Armed Dragon,” “Judgment Dragon,” “Cyber Dragon,” or “Chaos Sorcerer” is Special Summoned to the field by its own effect, you can activate “Royal Oppression” to negate its Summon. You can also use “Royal Oppression” to negate any Synchro Summon.

“Royal Oppression” can’t negate the Summon of a monster that was Special Summoned by another card (like “Call of the Haunted” or “Monster Reborn”). But it can negate the card itself that Special Summon monsters. This may sound confusing at first, but it’s pretty simple once you get the hang of it.


“Call of the Haunted” Special Summons 1 monster from the Graveyard. If I activate “Call of the Haunted,” you can use “Royal Oppression” to negate it. Then I won’t be able to Special Summon a monster from my Graveyard. But if you let me Special Summon a monster from my Graveyard with “Call of the Haunted,” you won’t be able to negate that monster’s Summon with “Royal Oppression.” It’ll be too late.

When Should I use Royal Oppression?


Now that you know when you can activate the effect of “Royal Oppression,” it’s important to know when you should flip “Royal Oppression” face-up in your Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Once “Royal Oppression” is face-up on the field, either player can pay 800 Life Points to use its effect and negate an opponent’s Special Summon. This means you need to be careful when deciding whether or not to activate “Royal Oppression.” You might not want to flip “Royal Oppression” when you have monsters in your hand that you want to Special Summon.

Let’s say you have a “Sangan” on the field in Defense Position with 2 DARK monsters in your Graveyard. Your opponent tries to Special Summon his last in-hand card, “Cyber Dragon,” to the field. You have “Royal Oppression” face-down and “Dark Armed Dragon” in your hand. Do you negate the Summon of “Cyber Dragon” by flipping “Royal Oppression”?

Unless your opponent doesn’t have enough Life Points to activate the effect of your “Royal Oppression,” he’ll be able to negate your “Dark Armed Dragon” on your next turn if you flip “Royal Oppression” now. You might want to let him Summon his “Cyber Dragon” and attack your “Sangan.” Then you can Special Summon “Dark Armed Dragon” next turn and your opponent won’t be able to use your “Royal Oppression” to negate it. Once “Dark Armed Dragon” is on the field, your “Royal Oppression” will make sure that your opponent can’t Special Summon his own “Dark Armed Dragon” or any other monster that could beat your Dragon. Also, since you have the biggest monster out, your “Royal Oppression” won’t hurt you because you don’t need to Special Summon anymore.

This is a famous strategy. Lots of Duelists, including ones that like to Special Summon a lot of monsters, put “Royal Oppression” in their Main Decks or Side Decks. They know that once they Special Summon a big monster like “Dark Armed Dragon” or “Judgment Dragon,” they can use “Royal Oppression” to protect that monster and lock their opponents out of the Duel.

“Royal Oppression,” is a powerful card that can give you a big advantage over your opponent if you play it right.
